MSW is a mixture of energy-rich materials such as paper, plastics, yard waste, and products made from wood. For every 100 pounds of MSW in the United States, about 85 pounds can be burned as fuel to generate electricity.
The biomass material we use can come from many sources, but typically includes green wood, recovered wood from urban uses or construction and demolition debris, and waste tires. Such items, if not used as fuel, are often thrown into already bulging landfills or left to decay on the forest floor, which can contribute to forest fires.
